3Points Connect – What Is The Cost Of Ticking The Box?
What is the cost of ticking the box to the mental health and well being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
The funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander programs has grown over the years. Organisations have gained access to this funding by ticking the box to meet tender criteria rather than collaborating with community members to develop sustainable responses to complex problems . This has resulted in the allocation of funds to organisations that have misrepresented their connection to the community and their capacity to deliver services and work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Does your team have a solid connection and relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or a token connection with Aunt at morning tea? Is the team you are part of culturally aware, due to the two day course you attended or are you culturally competent, truly participating and learning with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people? Do you walk alongside community or do you think you know what they need? So much funding has been misdirected resulting in friction within and between communities and often impacting negatively on the resilience and strength of community and the mental health and well being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
