Babara Arrowsmith’s inspiring presentation, ‘The Woman Who Changed Her Brain: A Personal Journey into the Brain – Shaping the Mind’ explores the incredible story of a woman who struggled with severe learning disabilities, built herself a better brain, and started a program that has helped thousands of others do the same. The genesis of the Arrowsmith Program of cognitive exercises lies in Barbara’s journey of discovery and innovation to overcome her own severe learning disabilities. Barbara is the author of the international bestseller, The Woman Who Changed Her Brain and she launched her updated book at our 3Points Connect workshop.

Barbara Arrowsmith

Barbara Arrowsmith Young is the founder and Director of Arrowsmith School and Arrowsmith Program and developed the program as a result of her own personal journey with learning disfficulties. In grade one, Barbara was diagnosed with a mental block which saw her have trouble with reading, processing concepts and dealt with being physically uncoordinated.

As part of her journey, Barbara worked hard to overcome these obstacles as best she could, now holding both a B.A.Sc. in Child Studies from the University of Guelph, and a Master’s degree in School Psychology from the University of Toronto. It was after her studies that she began to research and observe learning difficulties in preschool children and eventually this led to the creation of the first exercise of the Arrowsmith Program, designed to improve logical reasoning. After seeing success with this exercise, Barbara developed more exercises which targeted other functions of the brain, which has led to the program we know today.

3Bridges is excited to be offering the Arrowsmith Program.  The program is based on neuroscience research demonstrating that it is possible to address learning disabilities by
identifying and strengthening weak cognitive capacities. Arrowsmith School has used this program successfully since 1978. The goal of the Arrowsmith Program is to help students strengthen the weak cognitive capacities underlying their learning dysfunctions and to enable them to become effective, confident and self-directed learners for life.
